Battery Recycling

BBL Batteries takes its commitment to the Environment very seriously, currently only 3% of all batteries sold in the UK are recycled, the rest end up in landfill where the chemicals contained them cause pollution and contamination to the surrounding area, and over time soil as they start to leak heavy metals such as lead or mercury and corrosive acids.

Battery Recycling

In 2009 it was estimated that 40,000 tonnes of batteries were sold in the UK, and on the current recycles percentage means that 97% end up in landfill, thats an enormous 38,800 tonnes.

In 2009 a directive was issued to minimise this negative impact on the environment . It was not primarily a carbon reduction initiative but was a way to encourage producers and therefore distributors to take responsibility for this waste and make it easier for the end user to recycle their batteries.

As a producer of automotive batteries under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009, Regulation 36, we, Bristol Batteries Ltd t/a BBL Batteries are obliged to collect, free of charge and within reasonable time, waste automotive batteries for treatment and recycling from final holders e.g. garages, scrap yards, end-of-life vehicle Authorised Treatment Facilities, Civic Amenity Sites etc. We are required to do this in any calendar year we place new automotive batteries on the market.

As a producer of industrial batteries under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009, Regulation 35, we, Bristol Batteries Ltd t/a BBL Batteries produce Lead Acid batteries. We are obliged to take back free of charge, waste batteries supplied to an end user for treatment and recycling. We are required to do this in any calendar year we place new industrial batteries on the market. If any of our customers or in certain cases other end users, require us to take back Industrial batteries, they should contact us at 0117 9550536 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). We will agree the necessary arrangements for the return, proper treatment and recycling of the waste industrial batteries.

BBL Batteries can provide you with one or more recycling bins* (automotive & industrial batteries only), when these are nearly full we will then arrange to come and collect them, the bins will then be sealed and we will then process them. For smaller amounts of recycled batteries, please visit your local branch where we can ‘take back’ your used portable batteries, free of charge and recycle them in line with the 2009 Directive.

Should you have any further queries on recycling and legislation please contact any one of our branches and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
